I grew up in Northern Minnesota, insanely crazy about horses for years before I ever got one of my own.  My dad owned a small business, which wasn't ever very profitable, but it installed in me a desire to control my destiny, to run my own business.

I made a lot of mistakes in the businesses that I've ran over the years.  I sold - or tried to sell - brand name makeup.  I ran a small equine service business that I was too scared and too unfocused to market.  I tried a few multi-level-marketing type businesses.  I didn't make successes out of them, as my sponsors didn't understand anything about business, and I wasn't all that passionate about it, but I never gave up the dream, studying business books in spare moments as I drove my taxi cab, and writing out little business plans.

During the winter of 2004-2005, I took a teleclass, then enrolled in a coaching program that taught me the basics of doing business online.  Since then, I've been studying everything I can get my hands on, even if it's only slightly related to learning about sales and marketing.

"Roy" from the StableMangement Group on Yahoo says: "I have  a friend that owns a boarding stable. He goes to the sale and buys cheap horses, his barn mgr rides them, or cures any bad habits then he advertises "FREE HORSE WITH ONE YR BOARDING CONTRACT". HE CHARGES $250. a month either way. If they leave before the yr is out they either give the horse back or pay off the yr contract. He also offers a discount if they let him keep their credit card number on file so he can just run it through at the first of the month. No waiting on his money."

Personally, I think this is a FANTASTIC idea - board, as well as ancillary services, are the biggest expenses an owner has anyway, as well as the best money-maker a business has.  Offer lessons, or make them part of the deal, and there's a ready-made business.

You might tweak the amount per month, or where you get the horses, or what discipline you train them for - but this is a great business model!

You could also set their customers up on a PayPal subscription for the same effect, and not have to worry about some of the expenses associated with a merchant account.
